question-y thing
1. What would your character kill for? What would they die for?
She would kill if someone tried to hurt her, or someone she cared about. She'd die to protect the people she loves too- Mary isn't scared of dying. She's pretty certain there are worse things and she's seen a few of them, and lived through others.
2. What would they refuse to do under any circumstances? Why?
Let a child come to harm. She's got empathy where that's concerned.
3. What do they dream about? [Either literal or figurative].
People in beautiful clothing in beautiful rooms with nothing bad ever happening. Also, fairies, unicorns and gorgons.
4. What’s their biggest fear?
Jon Darby. Also, something bad happening to Slater or Harry.
5. What single object would they be most hard pressed to part with? Why?
Her doll, Lady Jane. It was a gift from her father.
6. What is their fondest memory?
Some of the vague shifting memories of her father swinging her around, Harry telling her a story or Ann playing with her. Some of her time in Paris with Evonne. Then there are other memories of things that never happened- the day Puck found her in the garden and told her all the tales of Faerie and how to summon a unicorn or dashing through Sherwood Forest with Robin and Will Scarlet. ... and Slater telling her that Jon wasn't coming back.
7. What is their worst memory?
... Do you really want to read that? Fine. But at your own risk.
8. What or who was were their most significant influence? Expound.
Mary would have been a lot more like her sister, probably. She was a sweet, happy, precocious little girl who was curious and absolutely sure of her world, until it all fell apart and she woke up in a nightmare. Now there's a part of her that is still a little girl and may always be. She might have grown up into someone who didn't believe in Slater's way of doing things, into someone who could not have sat and watched the 'justice' his men and Slater himself dished out without blinking. She might have grown up into someone who did not watch every shifting mood in those around her and try to please them. She might have grown up into someone who thought of sex as something that could be more than just lust and that people could love her. Instead, she lived with Jon Darby. She pretended to be the same little girl, day after day for years... and learned her part well. She learned that there are all kinds of monsters.
9. What do they believe makes a successful life?
Having people love you and pretty things to wear and a steady supply of marzipan.
10. What makes them laugh?
Lots of things. Ducks, jokes, silliness. Her brother being grim about nothing. Slater being outrageous. Lady Emilie's opinions on chaperones. Being reckless and taking chances.
11. What are their religious views?
... There's a god somewhere. Maybe. However, Slater is a generally more reliable.
12. What is their greatest strength?
Her ability to sense other people's moods through physical cues and voice tones. It's kept her alive. Though her ability to alter her own perceptions has kept her more sane.
13. Do they have a fatal flaw? If so, what is it?
Mary's flaw is her absolute need to make people happy and be perfect so they stay happy. Harry drives her a little nuts because she can't read him well, and can't seem to either make him happy or be what he wants because she can't figure out what he wants her to be. And clearly if she can't then she's failing and he will not care about her and she might as well not exist.
This same thing applies to Slater- if she makes him happy and he likes her then she has some worth but if she makes him unhappy then he will stop liking her and she is worthless again. ... It makes for a hellacious conflict of interest.
14. Who is the most important person in their life?
See the above answer? See the problems?
15. If they died or went missing, who would miss them most?
As far as she is concerned, no one. But I think Harry might miss having someone in the house, and the friendly dinners she'd like to give. Emilie and Evonne might miss a friend. Slater would probably miss havinga puppy someone who knew exactly what he was and didn't mind at all.
16. How would they describe themselves?
She wouldn't. I'm not sure she could. I suppose the best you might get would be "just a young lady, sir."
17. How would others describe them?
The going term seems to be 'sweet'
